As the temperatures drop, it’s time to bring your furniture inward. Sofas and chairs that have been on the exterior of the room should be moved closer in to create a cozy space for entertaining. If your living room has a fireplace, shift your furniture so that it’s pointing toward the fireplace to enjoy a roaring fire.
If you haven’t already, now’s the time to retire the airy, bright colors of spring and summer and switch to warm colors and fabrics. Pastel pinks and blues can be swapped out for similar shades with more depth and warmth, such as magenta or electric blue. Put away those sheer drapes and opt for a heavier fabric, which will pull double duty and help keep cold air out!
As the temperatures begin to drop, we begin to add layers… a sweater here, a scarf there. Now it’s time to provide some of that layering warmth to your décor, too! Add cozy throw blankets to your bed and sofa, especially in richer materials like cashmere or velvet, for a more luxurious feel and look. If your color palette is already vibrant, opt for a white throw blanket and pillows to create a winter wonderland indoors.
Layering works for floors, too! Pick up an area rug to quickly transform your room, or if you already have a large area rug, consider adding a small one on top that complements the rug underneath. Various colored or patterned carpet tiles are also an easy – and non-permanent – addition to any room without carpet.
With these simple additions, you can quickly – and inexpensively – update your décor to embrace winter’s beauty.
