A Home Investment, Courtesy of Paint

Freshening the paint in your home is frequently cited as one of the quickest and easiest ways to augment a home’s value and refresh the look, prior to selling. Aside from the cost of paint, some rollers and drop cloths, no professionals are needed and this task can be crossed off in a weekend. While conventional wisdom has always suggested to lean toward the neutral tones of off-white, ecru and eggshell, new studies from Zillow are recommending that it could be beneficial to rock the boat.

When Blue Means Green

The heart of a home is typically the kitchen and in this space, there are several textures to consider when contemplating a paint change. Take the existing hues of the countertops, cabinets, appliances and backsplash into account before rolling up your sleeves. Zillow’s research indicates that the most popular paint colors, based on a hearty return in investment, are soft blues and blue-gray tones in the kitchen. Homebuyers felt that white walls made the space feel sterile or cold; however, a soft blue lacquer on the walls complemented the space and resulted in a resale increase of approximately $1,800. And this trend is catching on – one of the most popular paint colors, according to Zillow, is currently Siberian Ice, a blue-gray hue.

The Appeal of Azure

The Appeal of Azure

The bathroom is a big focal point for Homebuyers. Since these rooms tend to be smaller than the kitchen, certain wall colors can drastically change the look of the space. The market has spoken and, similar to the kitchen, buyers are feeling blue. With an average increase in home value of $5,400, powder rooms with powder blue or periwinkle-adorned walls are a hit. When employing this hue, the key is to keep it in the lighter shades so the space doesn’t feel overwhelming, while also considering the countertops and, if applicable, cabinets. The soothing tones of periwinkle will help to relax your potential buyers and encourage them to imagine the space as their own.

Affinity for azure continues to other rooms of the home, too. Dining rooms featuring slate blue or navy blue, when paired with shiplap finishes, enjoyed a boost of nearly $2,000. And bedrooms in bold shades of cerulean or teal saw an increase of $1,800 in value. If selecting a bolder color of blue for the walls, consider neutral towels or bedding to balance the rooms.

Jazz up the look of your home with a new hue and the decision could increase your green while helping your home put its best foot forward.
