DIY: Canopy Bed Two Ways

Whether you’re looking to glam up your little girl’s room or construct a “fortress of solitude” for your little dude, a DIY canopy bed is a simple and cost-effective solution. With just a few curtain rods and some fabric, you can achieve the elegant look of a four-poster bed – without the expense – or a canopy that doubles as a headboard with an airy overhang!
Faux Four-poster

Faux Four-poster
There’s just something about the four-poster style that makes any bed feel fancier. Give your princess a bed fit for a palace with this oh-so-simple faux look:
Supplies:
- Three (3) ceiling-mount curtain rods
- Six (6) floor-length curtain panels
- Mounting hardware, if not included with curtain rods
Directions:
1. Before purchasing your curtain rods, measure the length and width of your bed to ensure you get the correct size (you won’t have a curtain rod along the side of your bed against the wall).
2. Measure and mark the ceiling where your brackets will go. You want the curtains to rest at the corners of the bed, but be sure to place your mounts outside the edges of the bed so your curtains won’t catch on the mattress or bed frame.
3. Mount the curtain rods into the ceiling, using drywall anchors for added security.
4. Place a curtain panel at each end of the three curtain rods to form your corners. If the bedroom receives excess outside light from windows, try blackout curtains that can be closed at night or naptime for additional darkness.

For a less formal look, this canopy doubles as a casual headboard. Try a bright printed fabric for a pop of color in a neutral room or a sheer, gauzy fabric for a lighter feel.
Supplies:
- Two (2) ceiling-mount curtain rods
- Length of fabric or lightweight blanket
- Curtain rings with clips
- Mounting hardware, if not included with curtain rods
Directions:
1. Before purchasing your curtain rods, measure the width of your bed to ensure you get the correct size (you want the rods to be at least as wide as your bed, or slightly wider).
2. Measure and mark the ceiling where your brackets will go. Place the rods parallel to the wall, one at the head of the bed and at the foot.
3. Before you select fabric, measure and add together the length of your bed, the height from the ceiling to the point you want your “headboard” to stop, plus 2 – 2.5 feet to allow for a swag effect over the bed. A lightweight blanket or duvet cover can be used to create your canopy, or you can head to your local fabric store to have a piece cut to your exact measurements.
4. If your curtain rods are mounted with just two brackets, you can simply drape your fabric over the curtain rail, allowing it hang down to headboard length at the head of the bed and billow down toward the bed in the middle. If your mounting includes a center bracket, use curtain rings with clips to hang your fabric in the same fashion.
And there you have it! With less than five supplies and steps, these DIY projects will have you saying, “Yes I can-opy!”
