Winterize Your Home Before the Chill Sets In
The first official day of winter isn’t until December 21, but there’s a lot you can do right now to prep your home for winter’s cold, icy grip. Following these tips will not only keep your home a bit warmer, but save you money in the process.
Chim Chim Cher-ee
If you enjoy the cozy smell and feel of a true wood-burning fire from year to year, now is the time to have your chimney cleaned and inspected. Having your chimney swept ensures the damper is properly working – and letting out those toxic fumes – with a screen to keep critters from hibernating in your home this winter.
Reversing Course
Instantly push warmer air down with flick of a switch… the fan switch, that is. Check your ceiling fan for a switch that allows you to reverse the blade directions so they turn clockwise instead of counter-clockwise. The clockwise rotation forces the warm air down for you to enjoy.
Batten Down the Hatches
No matter the time of year, one of the biggest ways to lose either heated or cooled air from your home is through window leakage. Make sure to caulk around window frames and apply weatherstripping between the sash and window frames – and door frames – to eliminate that pesky leakage.
Another way cold air seeps into our homes is through holes around pipes, vents and electrical outlets. Check under sinks in the bathroom, kitchen and basements and fill these holes with a spray insulating foam sealant. Small holes are easily closed up with caulk.
These simple and easy steps will keep more hot air in – and more money in your pocket.
