Embrace Unconventional Holiday Trees

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Everywhere you look, lights are twinkling, window displays are showcasing winter wonderlands and trees are going up in homes. If you love the warm, magical vibes of holiday décor, but want to mix things up a little, think outside the box with a nontraditional tree!
For the Bookworm
If you can’t think of a better way to spend these long winter days than cozied up on the couch with cocoa and a good novel, a book tree is for you! Don’t worry, no books are harmed in the making of this tree – they’re only un-shelved.
Decide where your tree will go – if you’re hoping to fill a corner of the room, you’ll need more books to make your tree taller, while a tabletop tree requires fewer hardbacks and paperbacks. Next, gather a variety of large and small books and begin assembling making a base of large, sturdy hardbacks with spines facing out. As you stack each layer, be sure the books’ edges are supported by two books on the layer below and use smaller, lighter books toward the top. Once you have your tree’s structure, wrap a strand or two of lights around it and top it off with your favorite holiday book!
The Space Saver

The Space Saver
Let’s be honest – Christmas trees take up a lot of real estate in your home. If you’re looking for a space-saving solution, go vertical with a wall tree. Use strands of garland to create a tall triangle on the wall, then swoop the garland from side to side, moving down in the shape of a tree. Add lights, ornaments or ribbon as you would to a standing tree and enjoy a classic look with a narrower footprint.
For those looking to branch out more from the traditional, try using colorful or patterned masking tape to create the shape of a tree directly on the wall and then string lights across it. Or if you’re artistic, use a paint pen to draw a tree with individual branches, then paint ornaments onto the branches.
Farmhouse Chic
For a unique shabby chic Christmas look, replace your tree with a wooden ladder. Add visual interest, by choosing a few styles of lights to wrap around your ladder. Easy design tip: twinkle lights and larger globe lights go well together. Once your lights are strung, hang ornaments from the strands and top your “tree” with a star, Santa figurine or potted plant – the sky’s the limit!
Christmas is a great time to embrace old traditions and make new ones as well. This year, create your own holiday tradition with a nontraditional tree and share the results with us at #LivingWeekley!
