Whether you’re getting your home ready for resale or just want to give your bathroom a simple makeover, replacing the toilet seat is a quick way to give this space a facelift.

It’s important to keep in mind that not all toilet seats are the same. They can range in size, shape and width. Before you pick out a new one at the store, take a moment to make note of the length and width of your old seat, as well as the distance between the two bolts that hold the seat in place. For the most accurate dimensions, measure from the center of the space between the bolts. With that information in hand, bring a measuring tape or ruler to the store to ensure that the new one you select is the correct size.

A toilet seat usually has plastic caps covering the bolt heads that hold the seat in place. These are generally located just behind the lid between the seat and the tank. Unsnap the caps and use a pair of pliers to hold the nuts underneath while you unscrew the two bolts with a screwdriver. Remove the seat and lid from the toilet base by lifting it straight up. Before adding your new seat, thoroughly clean the toilet bowl rim using baking soda or cleaner to remove any grime or rust.

With your toilet clean and pristine, it’s time to install your new seat. Carefully position it on the bowl and insert the bolts through the holes at the back. Hand-tighten the nuts to make sure they are correctly positioned before using pliers and a screwdriver to tighten. Remember to use caution during this step, as a soft touch will help avoid accidentally cracking the porcelain or your new seat.

With just a little time and effort, your toilet will look tidy and new, even after years of use. As small as a change as it may seem, it can alter how people view your bathroom and help to add value to your home. So go ahead and flush out the old, to bring a new sparkle to your bathroom.
