Herb Gardens That Take Little Thyme

How many times have you gone to the refrigerator to pull out fresh herbs just to realize they’ve wilted and gone bad? Herbs not only brighten up a dish, but they can also liven up your kitchen as a stylish addition to your décor. Try these simple, do-it-yourself herb planter ideas for your home and enjoy tasty herbs year-round.

Vertical Garden

Build a vertical garden by utilizing the sides of the cabinets above your sink. Decorate the outside of plastic pots without drains and then drill a small hole in the side of each pot, about an inch or so down from the top. Adhere command hooks to your cabinets and simply hang your filled pots from the hooks. The beauty of hanging your planters here is they will receive sunlight and provide quick access to the sink for washing.

Bake Up a Planter

Repurpose your old baking pans to fashion a garden for your wall. Take an eight- or ten-inch circular pan and drill a small hole in the base of the pan, an inch from the edge. Flip the tin over onto a sheet of polymer plastic and trace around the bottom to make a semi-circle, then carefully cut it out. Apply a strong adhesive around the baking tin edges and stick your plastic over it, making sure to get a good seal so water can’t leak out.

Next, pot your herbs. Add a layer of stones to the bottom, then pot soil and the herb of your choice. Nail your tin to the wall through the drilled hole and your decorative planter is complete. You can create just one, or multiple, for an interesting wall feature.

A quick alternative is to throw aside the traditional terracotta planters and employ whimsical containers to sprout your plants. Pot herbs in tin cans, mason jars, old tea pots or cups for a simple and artful planter. The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

With a dash of creativity and a pinch of hard work, you can create a fun and eye-catching herb garden that will add flavor to – not just your food – but your home as well.
