In 2018, Purple Will Reign

The Pantone Color Institute, better known as the color authority, has selected the deep purple hue of Ultra Violet as the Color of the Year for 2018. The bold color, which is a stark contrast from last year’s Greenery, combines the right blend of aesthetics to create a space that would make Prince proud.
The Royal We
Chosen, in part, because of its “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking,” according to Pantone, this hue boasts a wealth of versatility. With blue undertones, the vibrant Ultra Violet is sure to make a statement wherever it appears. The color purple has been associated with royalty, power and wealth for centuries, with Queen Elizabeth I even banning anyone except close members of the royal family from wearing it. Purple's elite status stems from the rarity and cost of the dye originally used to produce it. Luckily, today’s manufacturing process ensures that this color is widely available to both royalty and the masses.

Shades similar to Ultra Violet have a reputation for creating a soothing and calming effect. As a result, this hue lends itself well to the bathroom, where you can create a soft, spa-like atmosphere for relaxing after a long day. Consider an Ultra Violet-tiled accent wall, countertop accessories that provide a pop of purple or linens that truly showcase the color’s vibrancy.
In darker spaces, such as a media room, purple upholstery is the ideal backdrop for binging on favorite movies and shows, without being a distraction during bright moments onscreen. Purple rugs or accents add a stately element when the room isn’t in use, but is sure to add a touch of dramatic flair when the projector is rolling so you can remain trendy while lounging.

When incorporating a bold hue like Ultra Violet, it’s best to start with a space where you don’t spend a large amount of time. Loud color schemes can be overwhelming in bigger doses, such as the kitchen and Family Room, so reserve this more assertive tone for entryways, hallways and stairways.
If you have the ideal purple piece that you want to incorporate, set it against neutral tones with plenty of light, to provide a grounding counterbalance to the more eye-catching Ultra Violet. White, grays and beige can offset bolder colors in such items as pillows, rugs and artwork.
Impress friends and neighbors by incorporating the bold Color of the Year and you’ll be amazed at how well this vibrant hue fits into your home. Ultra Violet in 2018 is looking so bright, you’ll need to wear sunglasses.
