Don’t Let a Toilet Fill Valve Disturb the Peace

So you’ve just settled into your comfy chair with a good book when you hear a faint, intermittent noise coming from the bathroom. That noise can start out as a hum, but grow to an annoying scream, but there’s no reason to panic – it might just be a little cry for help from your toilet that’s a surprisingly easy fix. All you need is an adjustable wrench and a valve replacement kit available from a hardware store.
Out with the Old…
Start by removing the tank lid and turning off the water supply behind the toilet. Then disconnect the refill tube from the overflow pipe inside the tank and flush the toilet to empty out all the water.
Place a small plastic bowl on the floor under the tank to catch any drips. Now use your wrench to disconnect the water supply and remove the valve base lock nut beneath the tank.
In with the New
Position the new assembly inside the tank and insert its threaded end through the hole in the bottom of the tank. Hand-tighten the new valve base lock nut and twist the nut a quarter turn further with your wrench. Reattach the water supply hose and connect the new refill tube to the overflow pipe using the supplied clip. Turn on the water supply, flush the toilet and check for leaks.
Now that you’ve quickly completed your task, it’s time to enjoy the peace and quiet while returning to your book.
