Light it Up

Now that spring has sprung and you’ve spent hours selecting the right arrangements, planting fresh flowers and mulching your garden beds, don’t let the bloom fall off your beautiful display when the sun goes down. Make your hard work and green thumb the focal point of your yard with the right outdoor lighting.

Front and Center

No matter the size or scope, every front lawn can benefit from outdoor lighting. A few path lights leading up to your front door can create a welcoming glow. Try hiding light fixtures under shrubs to further create a soft mood to your lawn. Shed light on a garden pathway with stake lighting or highlight a bench or water fixture with pole lighting that casts light from above.

For a more dramatic look to your yard start by lighting up a tree's canopy with a spotlight set at the base of the trunk. Up light your home’s unique exterior with bold lighting that showcases columns, unique architectural details, climbing vines, a gazebo or fence lines.

Start Small or Go for Broke

Even with a small lawn, outdoor lighting can add an enviable element. You can add ambience to your yard with a simple light kit available at your local hardware store. Solar lights are an inexpensive, eco-friendly option and the easiest to install. Make certain the photovoltaic cell in the lighting fixture is positioned to receive enough light during the day so that it will illuminate at night. Insert the stake in the ground and you’re ready for the evening’s light show.

A brighter step up, low voltage lighting requires an outdoor receptacle and a transformer to convert a 120 volt line coming from the house to 12 volts for the outdoor lights. This can easily be installed yourself. Hand-blown glass orbs are a beautiful and unique form of outdoor lighting that lends an artistic touch to your yard. Spotlights and floodlights are good choices to focus on visual interest such as lawn sculptures, bird baths, or interesting shrubs and trees, bringing them to life at night.

You can also put on a big production by hiring a professional to install wiring in your yard to light up your entire landscape and home exterior. This requires 120 volt lighting which means wiring must be buried 18 inches in the ground or encased to protect it from water. A licensed electrician is the best person for this job. Once installed, the sky is the limit as far as what you choose to highlight: a single tree, your front bed, your home’s extensive stonework or all of it at once!

Your yard is a stage. Bring up the lights to show off another dimension of your home and you may receive a standing ovation!
