Squeegee Your Way to Windows That Wow

For many people, window washing is an oft-forgotten chore. Unless you spend a large amount of time gazing out the windows, you probably don’t notice how dirty they can be. Don’t leave your windows out in the cold! Ditch the cleaning spray and paper towels, which are likely making the situation (and the streaks) worse. Gather the right tools to make the work worth your while and get your windows gleaming!

Secret Window Weapon

You’ll find most of the window washing tools you need around the home: a bucket, a natural sponge, some clean, lint-free rags, a chamois and dishwashing liquid. The one tool you probably don’t have, but absolutely need, is a squeegee – a clean window’s best friend.

When shopping for a squeegee, don’t automatically go for the least expensive option as it might leave your windows streaked. Look for a size that closely matches the width of your window panes – smaller for multi-pane and larger for picture windows. If you have picture windows, you might want to invest in a large wooly strip applicator to use instead of a sponge for scrubbing the dirt off. It can save a lot of time and effort.

Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid to a bucket of warm water. Dip the sponge or wooly strip applicator into the water and scrub the window from left to right and top to bottom, working the soapy water into the edges to loosen all the dirt and grime.

Once your windows are scrubbed and sudsy, it’s time to put that squeegee to work! For multi-pane windows, begin at the top and pull the squeegee in a single stroke from top to bottom to avoid dripping on areas you’ve already cleaned. For picture windows, start at the top left and pull the squeegee over the glass in a reverse “S” pattern, slightly overlapping each new stroke over the last. Use a dry rag to wipe the squeegee’s rubber blade between strokes. Once the whole window is dry, you can remove any remaining water from the edges with a chamois.

If you’ve never used a squeegee before, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Step back and take in those sparkly, crystal-clear pieces of glass that are your clean windows.
