Straight from Italy with Style!

The world’s largest exhibition for ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings (CERSAIE) was recently held in Bologna, Italy, highlighting several hot trends taking center stage for 2018. Retro graphics and unusual combinations of materials and textures are just a few of the major takeaways that continue to reverberate throughout the tile industry.

Mix Media According to Your Mood
Blue hues are a big hit this year. Whether you opt for a monochromatic blue or go bold with blue-patterned tiles, you’re sure to be on point. Another trend gaining popularity is patchwork tiling – literally laying out a rich patchwork of tiles with contrasting colors and often alternating textures and patterns. One tile may be a floral color with a stippled texture and the next could be a deep, earthy color with a brushed or diamond pattern.
Patchwork tiles offer the ideal opportunity to mix media. You can incorporate metal, cement and even wooden tiles that are natural and unfinished, glazed or hand-painted with patterns that speak to you. Even if you want a solid color or material throughout the space, you can still alternate simple patterns and finishes for a more subtle contrast. This look is visually interesting and sure to be a conversation piece in any home.
Retro Chic
Plenty of 1970s vintage and mid-1960s Mod-inspired tiles are on trend with hand-drawn graphics in stunning, either subtle or wild, contrasting colors. Consider a sophisticated gray-on-gray with alternating graphics, or go a little bolder with white and taupe or charcoal line patterns. Don’t be afraid to get colorful.
Pop art graphics take the vintage look to a fresh place. Hand-painted faces and scenes can be arranged to play out on a bold accent wall – like a story written in tiles. These become an instant focal point in any room when introduced in black and white, with pops of bright, primary colors.

You Do the Math
Geometric patterns are increasingly popular in the tile industry and often combine straight and curved lines and shapes that draw the eye. The six-sided hexagon is creating a lot of interesting structure in the newest tile trends. Small hexagons in varying colors can create very artful flooring, while large, interlocking hexagons on an accent wall can be a striking showpiece.
Chevrons are also making a comeback. Their v-shaped angles allude to depth and movement when arranged in graduating colors from light to dark. Another idea is to use a wood-grain porcelain plank and, instead of aligning them in parallels, set them into a chevron pattern to keep it cutting edge.
Patchwork tiling, vintage graphics and geometric patterns are just a few of the favorites this year. Whether you are thinking about Italian tile for flooring, backsplashes or a dramatic accent wall, these tiles are all works of art.
