Charleston, SC (December 10, 2019): More than 3,000 people locally – and 60,000 nationwide – walked away from the Thanksgiving table with a full belly and a happy heart this year, thanks to the partnership of David Weekley Homes and 18 charities across the U.S. In Charleston, David Weekley Homes teamed up with Lowcounty Food Bank, a nonprofit organization that has served the greater Charleston area for more than 35 years, to provide meals to needy families.
“We cannot thank David Weekley enough for providing nutritious food to our food bank,” said Alexis Barbalace, annual giving officer with Lowcountry Food Bank. “Not only did you help our neighbors in need, but you helped fund our mission to lead the fight against hunger by providing us resources to purchase a brand new pallet jack. We recently had to retire one, so this generosity comes at a critical time.”
From November 1 – 15, David Weekley Homes hosted its fifth annual companywide Thanksgiving Drive, bringing together its homeowners, real estate agents, vendors, trade partners and team members to collect 150,000 pounds of food for nearly 60,000 people across the country.
“Knowing that these families were able to have a nutritious meal for Thanksgiving really warms my soul,” said Sarah Kemp, senior marketing director with David Weekley Homes in Charleston.
Lowcountry Food Bank helps fight hunger in the greater Charleston area by distributing food to nearly 300 partner agencies, including soup kitchens, homeless shelters and emergency food pantries. The food bank also empowers people to make healthy and nutritious food choices.
“It has been an absolute pleasure working with David Weekley Homes this holiday season, and I hope we can continue to partner in the future to help feed those in need in our community,” Barbalace said.
To assist Lowcountry Food Bank this year, David Weekley Homes collected approximately 3,900 pounds of nonperishable food items and $1,200 in monetary donations during the two-week drive. The Thanksgiving Drive is a volunteer and philanthropic initiative of the company’s CARE program, which allows the extended David Weekley Homes family to live out its purpose of Building Dreams, Enhancing Lives in each of the communities in which it builds.
