Decked Out for Independence Day

Fireworks, food and fun are all on the list for most Fourth of July festivities, but decorations complete the celebration. Whether you’re hosting a small soiree for six or a big backyard barbecue for 50 – or want to add a patriotic feeling to your home this season – here are some decorating ideas for a star-spangled summer!

Design a dazzling display

From streamers and centerpieces to flowers and banners, there is a plethora of themed decorations you can purchase in time for Independence Day. Home décor shops and craft stores are great places to find Fourth of July-themed throw pillows, place settings, wind chimes and other decorative items.

If you’re on a budget, get creative using white lights that were a part of your Christmas decorations to liven up a table setting or outdoor patio. Another option is to set your table with a basic table cloth in either red, white or blue. If you have colored construction paper, use it to cut out star shapes and place them around your table or even along the walkway of your home. Also, confetti in America’s colors sprinkled in easy-to-clean places can add festive fun.

Make your sweets sparkle

Are cookies and cakes on your cookout menu? Use red velvet or strawberry-flavored batter to add a colorful cheer to your dessert table. Food coloring and celebratory sprinkles are also a great option for batter or icing.

Another deliciously decorative idea is to serve your guests red or blue beverages and garnish them with matching cocktail umbrellas, or using appetizer toothpicks with American flags attached. Both of these options can be found in most grocery store baking aisles.

Final festive touches

Bring it all together with music! Plug into a patriotic station on Pandora or select a set of songs on Spotify to get your guests in a festive mood. And, don’t forget Old Glory! Hanging the American flag from the front porch is the consummate Independence Day decoration. Let freedom ring!
