Attach Anything With the Right Fasteners

Hanging Pictures

The best way to hang anything in your home is to drive a screw directly into the wooden stud. Unfortunately, the studs behind your walls don’t always coincide with your aesthetic vision. In the average home, studs are placed 16 inches apart—sometimes as much as 24 inches apart. So how do you hang that irreplaceable heirloom painting when the wall studs refuse to cooperate?

Don’t use a single nail. Over time, a nail can work itself free from the gypsum in the drywall and eventually begin to sag. Picture hangers are the simplest fasteners to install. They force you to drive the nail at the proper angle to prevent the picture from pulling the nail down over time. They also leave the smallest hole to repair.

Plastic Anchors

These come in a range of sizes and are great for hanging anything from 10 to 25 pounds. The conical-shaped anchor is installed by pre-drilling a hole into the wall that is slightly smaller than the anchor itself. Gently tap it into the hole with a hammer for a snug fit. You can then use a screwdriver to install the metal screw into the anchor.

The screw-type anchors don’t need a pre-drilled hole. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, apply enough pressure to gently twist the anchor into the wall until it seats itself against the drywall. Then use the screwdriver to drive in the metal screw.

Molly Bolts

Molly Bolts

These fasteners work best for hanging heavier objects, although they are a little more difficult to install. Also, they leave a larger hole, which might be an issue if you ever need to remove the item and patch the wall.

To install a Molly bolt, bore a hole in the wall large enough to accommodate the bolt. Then tap it into the wall until the round flange seats. Tighten the bolt until the slotted metal backing expands behind the wall to form an anchor. Then remove the bolt and replace it while attaching the item to the wall.

Using these methods, you’ll never have to let drywall stand between you and your art again.
