A Quiet Natural Disaster

When it comes to home disasters, there are many that will loudly make themselves known. Tornadoes, fires and hurricanes are sudden and noisy. But there is an even greater threat to your home that can sneak up on you without a peep – termites!

According to the National Pest Management Association, termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damages annually. That’s far more than tornadoes, fires and earthquakes combined. Unchecked, termites could quite literally eat you out of house and home.

Know the Signs

A clear sign of a termite infestation is hollowed or damaged wood in your floor, walls or ceilings. Periodically check for blisters in the wood, sagging floors or unexplained cracks on your walls or ceilings. Termites travel in swarms. Check windows, doors and other access points for discarded wings, indicating a termite infestation.

Other visible signs of termites include mounds of termite pellets, often resembling sawdust or coffee grounds.

Keeping Termites Away

Termites love a moist environment so it’s important to address any leaky plumbing, faulty gutters or air conditioner condensation as soon as possible. Reduce any openings that could offer termites access to the structure of your home by sealing cracks and gaps as soon as possible to eliminate entry points.

Another common access point for termites is any wood-to-ground contact in your home. If possible, make sure to leave plenty of space the soil and any wood portions of your home.

Remove any potential food sources for termites, such as dead trees or firewood, away from your home.

Unfortunately, termite damage can occur for a while before you notice any significant structural damage. It’s best to be proactive when it comes to controlling termites by always being on the lookout and scheduling an annual termite inspection from a reputable company.
