Live Authentically with Wabi-sabi Design

Our homes are a reflection of our real life – authentic, imperfect and messy at times. And, let’s be honest, real life does not look like a magazine photo, and your home doesn’t have to, either. Luckily, the hot 2018 trend of wabi-sabi design embraces imperfections and celebrates the authenticity of a lived-in home.

Welcome Home, Wabi-sabi

Wabi-sabi is an ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy that focuses on discovering the beauty in natural things – flaws and all. Those who embrace the spirit of wabi-sabi believe that simple things are beautiful because of, not in spite of, their simplicity and see worn or aged items as well-loved. When incorporating this style into your home, opt for items with natural elements and authentic pieces over mass-produced, glossy-finished finds.

Try adding a raw wood tray with uneven grain to your entry table to hold your keys. Display a bouquet of fresh flowers in a hand-thrown vase with crackled glaze. Mix things up with mismatched, carved wooden chairs at the dining table and a set of handmade ceramic dishes that don’t quite match. To play up the lived-in look, try pre-wrinkled linen fabrics on the beds or window treatments – and as an extra bonus, they negate the need for regular ironing!

Be Careful with Clutter

While the philosophy of wabi-sabi does allow for a more relaxed, homey style, be mindful that your home doesn’t cross over into cluttered, chaotic disarray. That’s not to say you can’t have a few honey-do tasks hanging around your home, such as the small pile of clean clothes waiting to be folded in a chair or a stack of papers ready to be filed on your desk – who doesn’t have those? However, be aware of the items you keep and display in your home.

Wabi-sabi celebrates simplicity, but don’t hold on to worn down or rustic objects for the sake of embracing this trend. As you incorporate wabi-sabi décor into your home, search for beautiful, handmade pieces that offer functionality over ornamentation in order to keep your home from feeling cluttered with things you can’t actually use.

Whether you choose to purchase new décor, showcase older keepsakes or just relish in leaving the bed unmade for a day or two, you can bring the imperfect beauty of wabi-sabi into your home and your life.
