Back to School DIY Projects
Make school cool with these easy projects!
Get the school year started off right with some fun and easy DIY projects! Your little (or not so little) ones can personalize their books, lockers and notebooks with some simple materials.
Bluffton to Beaumont Book Covers
Education is an adventurous journey so why use a boring brown paper bag to cover a textbook? Grab a map (found at local supermarkets) and cut a piece large enough to overlap the book’s edges by 2 inches on all sides. Measure the spine’s width, and snip 2 inches off the top and bottom edges of the map at this measurement. Tuck these flaps in and finish covering the book by wrapping the map over the edges on all sides and taping into place.
Chalkboard Notebook
All you need for this cool craft is an inexpensive notebook, some chalkboard paint from the hardware store and a sponge paintbrush. Tuck a piece of scrap paper under the cover, protect the area you are working on with newspaper, and then begin painting. This project requires about two coats of paint – let dry for about an hour between coats – but an extra coat may be needed if the coverage is too thin. Once dry, your kiddos can add their own chalk designs or even play tic tac toe with their classmates!
Locker Loot
Lockers are one of the coolest parts of middle and high school. Lockers aren’t merely a place to keep books and supplies, they’re a place where students can show off their style. One cool way to customize a locker is to take everyday objects and recycle them into unique, practical locker sets. Clean an aluminum can very well (you don’t want the locker to smell like tomato soup!), glue on scrapbooking paper, and attach a stick-on magnet to create a fun pencil cup! Use coordinating colorful printed tape (available at craft supply stores) to create a border around a mirror for the always-important locker mirror!
These projects are easy on your pocketbook and a great way to get the kids excited about the new school year in front of them. So what are you waiting for? Grab some supplies and get “craft” to school!
