1. Start planning early
Transfer utilities, connect TV and internet and update your address. If you take care of these items 1-2 weeks in advance, you won’t feel overwhelmed with the post office and any financial institutions on moving day. Also, identify new healthcare providers. While getting suggestions from locals is your best bet, you can also research online at World Report’s Doctor Finder.

2. De-clutter and donate
As you inch closer to move-in day, donate or sell unwanted items, furniture and clothing. Reach out to local charities or have a garage sale to make some extra cash.

3. Arrange professional movers
A large point of stress can be the actual moving process itself. Eliminate any tension by hiring professional movers and packers. They have the equipment to handle all of your larger items in one trip and know the best strategy for loading and unloading a truck. Arrange food and beverages for the moving team and your family on moving day as a special treat.

4. Unpack and decorate
Take time to discuss the layout of your new home prior to unpacking. If you have children, involve them in decisions like the color of the walls in their bedroom or the placement of the furniture.

Once everything has been moved, start unpacking to make yourself feel more comfortable in your new home. It’s a good idea to prepare the bedrooms first. It can act as your personal sanctuary at the end of your long day of unpacking.

5. Get connected
One of the most exciting things about being able to design your dream home, watch it come to life and move in, is to explore the community you’re moving into! Meet your neighbors, go for a walk, explore nearby restaurants or join a local Facebook group. Get involved in your new community so you start to feel right at home.

6. Make your new house a home
After the hustle and bustle of moving, throw a housewarming party! Selecting a date for a party also sets a great unpacking deadline. Invite your closest friends and family over and start making memories in your new home.

With these simple tips, you can look forward to a remarkable chapter in your new home! Watch for our next issue with tips on how to transition your children into a new community.
