Whether you’re looking to remodel your kitchen, or you’re building your dream home, there’s no shortage of ideas to help you create a functional, yet beautiful space that you’ll love for years to come. While the countertops, cabinetry and lighting fixtures are all an integral part of the overall design of the kitchen, it’s also the small details that can make the heart of your home a standout! Not long ago, wooden pallets were merely thought of as something used to transport goods by a forklift. Today, a reclaimed wood pallet is an artist’s blank canvas ready to be transformed into any number of crafty projects. One such project is a living wall garden that is ideal if don’t have a large yard or are dipping your toe into the gardening world. With a few simple tools, a pallet, weed barrier fabric, paint and chalk, your green thumb will be blooming in time for a summer harvest.

Build Your Base

Build Your Base

To begin, find a sturdy pallet with strong boards. You may have to use the claw of a hammer to remove some slats to open up the pallet in order to fit your plantings. Next, paint your pallet with an exterior paint that will hold up to the elements. Add a creative touch by using chalkboard paint that will allow you to easily label your garden and change it at will. Chalkboard paint comes in a variety of colors so you can get as colorful as you please.

Once your painted pallet has dried, cut to size pieces of polyethylene weed barrier fabric. Use a staple gun to adhere the fabric to the insides of the slats so that they form a loose trough. Next, fill the area with soil and nestle your plants inside. Be sure to allow for growth in spacing your plants appropriately. With colored chalk, label your garden by writing the names of what you planted on the painted slats.

There’s no limit to what you can plant. Try an herb or a also vegetable garden with hot peppers, sprouts, cherry tomatoes or radishes. Lettuce varieties work well in a pallet garden and fill out nicely as they grow. If you love fresh flowers, forego the produce and add pops of color with flowers. Water your new garden regularly and place the pallet in a spot with ample sun to watch Mother Nature provide a bountiful harvest!
