Is Your Yard Flat-lining from Winter’s Wrath?
Revive it with a few green thumb go-tos
It’s a great idea to have a look at your lawn in early
spring. Winter can be harsh, robbing your yard of precious nutrients, setting the stage for a weed invasion. Never fear, here are some simple tips to get your yard ready for spring.
Get the jump on weeds
One time-consuming way is to hand pull out weeds, paying close attention to pull the entire root out along with the weed. A more practical method is a weed killer. An organic weed killer is a good choice because it has fewer toxins and is more environmentally friendly. Visit your local hardware store or nursery to find the weed killer suited to your local climate and soil make-up.
Fertilization
Spring is a crucial time to fertilize because it replenishes the food reserves your yard draws from while dormant in the winter and fuels grass’ rapid growth phase. Be sure not to over-fertilize! Many Homeowners tend to distribute way too much fertilizer at the first sign of green grass growth. In reality, the best thing to do is to apply a light amount of fertilizer in early spring, and then apply a larger dose a bit later in the season, after the initial growth rush.
Mowing
Contrary to popular belief, setting your mower at a very low height can actually increase weeds by exposing the soil surface to sunlight and removing stored nutrients in leaf blades. So, don’t be afraid to raise the blade a bit before you start mowing. You will enjoy a healthier, greener lawn your neighbors will notice!
Even if the weather in your area is still a bit chilly, it’s time to start thinking about giving your lawn a little TLC and these tips will help. Good luck this spring!
