Low-cost, High-impact Home Updates

We all know the feeling… You’re looking at your list of home improvement and honey-do projects, and as you begin mentally adding up the cost, you get a little queasy. While major renovations may be necessary, whether to increase your home’s resale value or to enjoy for yourself, there are plenty of low-cost updates and additions that can give you a huge bang for your buck!

Under Pressure

While many people give only a passing glance to the concrete surfaces around a home, it does make a difference when your sidewalks, porches and driveway are freshly cleaned. Pressure washing is a facelift that can take years off your home’s exterior! Whether you own a pressure washer or plan to rent one for the project, don’t forget to put safety first with close-toe shoes and eye protection.

Once you’ve donned your safety gear, it’s time to wash away! Be sure to read all the instructions for your machine to ensure proper use and maintenance throughout the process. Use a finer nozzle for stubborn stains like greasy motor oil. If your surfaces have mold or mildew, cover them in soapy suds before washing at a lower pressure level. As the dirt and grime washes away, the surfaces surrounding your home will shine!

Designer Doors

Open the door to a higher home value by upgrading your home’s interior doors. Take your flat doors to the next level by creating a faux-paneled look using inexpensive, flat-front picture frames. Measure your door and decide what size frames you want to use – don’t forget to account for spacing around the doorknob. Once you’ve purchased your frames, gently pull the metal tabs out of the back with a pair of pliers. Use a handheld level and a tape measure to space and place your frames, then tape them to the door with the back side facing out. Trace the corners lightly with a pencil, then remove the frames and tape.

To attach your frames, apply a heavy-duty adhesive to their flat front side and place them within your pencil marks on the door. Hold the frames to the door while the glue sets, then reapply tape to ensure they stay in place. When the glue is dry, remove the tape and apply caulk along the seams where the frame meets the door, smoothing with your finger. After the caulk dries, paint the entire door and then sit back and take in your door’s new designer details.

With just a little money and some good ol’ elbow grease, you can add the dressed-up details that give your home an extra wow factor!
